Examining Code of Ethics

DEC and NAEYC have many different Codes of Ethics. There are just a few that stick out to me that I feel strongly about.

  1. DEC feels that you should always display professional and interpersonal behavior. This includes being respectful to children by using appropriate language. Demonstrating the highest level of integrity and truthfulness towards the children and employees. Finally, serving as advocate (a voice for those who cannot defend themselves) for children with disabilities and their families.
    • The message that's being conveyed sets the standard for educators to respect children, families, and employees to be respectful to all those most importantly children. I also feel it's important to remember that we are the advocates for children and that we are their voice. By respecting them and teaching them by demonstrating the highest standards we are changing lives.
  2. To be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care and education and to stay informed through continued education. (NAEYC)
    • This is something I currently do. I decided to get my bachelors because I wanted to continue to learn about children and their development. When I realized there was more to learn I decided to pursue my Masters while becoming child care credentialed, and taking other professional development courses which my job requires but i'm more than willing to take. It's beneficial to stay informed with the latest because this field as we all know is ever changing.
  3. To appreciate the vulnerability of children and their dependence on adults. (NAEYC)
    • I feel it's important to understand that children are young and don't know everything that we know. When we were their age we wanted adult guidance for everything but still wanted to be independent. It's important to know that they are growing, developing humans that have a natural hunger for adult satisfaction, nurturing, and respect. By fostering these thing you will help a child grow up to be more independent and self sufficient.

  1. Amen to that! Some adults just see children as children and do not really believe they deserve respect, well they are wrong, they are little people who deserve just as much respect as any other human being.

Continuing education is also very important, especially in this field. Changes happen more often then we see it but having the knowledge allows us to handle any and all changes, and most importantly continue to provide effective services to children and their families.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. As educators of young children we are ones they look up to. It is super important to use appropriate language and also understand that they are looking up to us for guidance. We need to be the positive role-models in their lives teaching them right from wrong and showing them they are valuable. Show respect to gain respect even with the youngsters!!!!

  3. We must be knowledgeable of the information in order to provide it to the children. I am furthering my education so that I can have as much knowledge as possible to be able to share it to the people who come into my presence. Also, I think it is very important for the children to have a voice. Just because they are small people does not mean that they do not deserve respect. We should be respectful of children just like we are as adults. We must remain professional at all times. I enjoyed reading your blog.

  4. It is important for us as adults to be respectful in our words and behavior when we are dealing with children. Harsh and angry words can leave life-long scars on a child. We must also remember that children model what they see in us. If we want to create a better generation then we must set the example now.
Secondly if we are going to help our students to develop their fullest potentials then they must feel comfortable around us. If we shout at them and insult them they will not feel loved and welcome or safe to be themselves around us.
